He has been involved in the development and application of computer systems for processing, analysis, and display of biomedical image data for over 30 years. His research interests are in biomedical image visualization, image processing, image modeling, virtual reality, advanced software systems and distributed high-performance computing systems, and networks for biomedical image analysis. He has developed several specific clinical applications of these techniques, including 3-D image-guided neurosurgery for brain cancer and epilepsy, prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, quantification and treatment of coronary artery disease, catheter-based myocardial ablation, radiation therapy planning, craniofacial reconstructive surgery, and computerized histological analysis. He has designed and taught several academic courses in image processing and visualization, and has developed a unique curriculum in biomedical imaging science. He has successfully mentored more than 20 Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. degree students. His continuing interests include design and evaluation of new-generation paradigms for biomedical imaging and visualization systems of the future, particularly for medical treatment planning, minimally invasive image-guided clinical procedures, computer assisted surgery, medical education, and imaging science curricula.,Dr. Robb is a member of the American Physiological Society, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Computing Machinery, the National Computer Graphics Association and the International Society for Computer Assisted Surgery. He is Editor, Associate Editor, and editorial board member of several prestigious international journals. He has been and is principal investigator on several NIH research grants and has over 300 publications in the field of biomedical image processing, including five books and 30 book chapters. He has patented several inventions related to display, manipulation, and analysis of computer-generated medical images. He has directed development of comprehensive software packages which provide advanced capabilities for multidimensional biomedical image visualization and analysis in basic research, clinical practice, and education. These software packages are used in over 300 institutions around the world and have been licensed to several companies. He was honored in 2000 with a Named Professorship by the Board of Trustees of Mayo Foundation/Clinic. He received the prestigious award in recognition of his many contributions to medical research and education over a span of 30 years. The endowed professorship, called the Scheller Professorship in Medical Research, cites him as a “respected leader, innovative scientist, and caring educator”.
