Research Interests
My laboratory is interested to understand how extracellular factors control the fate of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). We have elucidated regulation of key pluripotency factor NANOG, epigenetic modifiers DNMT3B and JMJD1C, apoptotic factor Caspase 3, and cell membrane transporter ABCG2 by BMP, TGFb and/or FGF signaling in hESCs. We are also interested in exploring novel approaches to developing stem cell therapies, and have recently demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cells derived from hESCs (hES-MSCs) using innovative methods significantly reduce the severity of disease in an animal model of multiple sclerosis, and that hES-MSCs offer much better efficacy than human bone marrow derived MSCs that are currently being tested in clinical trials for multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases. Our current research interests include:
Optimised generation and maintenance of human embryonic stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hES-MSCs)

Marfan syndrome modelled with induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells
