I am broadly interested in the application of dynamical systems modeling, machine learning, and artificial intelligence methods to problems in medicine. In particular, I am interested in brain function, consciousness, and cognition, and in the intersection of machine learning and model-based methods.
Though I am an engineer by trade, my avocation has always been literature; Yeats has long been my favorite poet, and my favorite novels over the years (in roughly chronological order) have been The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott. Fitzgerald, Atonement by Ian McEwan, The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro (who, to my satisfaction, won the Nobel in literature in 2017!), and the 14th-century Ming Dynasty masterpiece, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
