Research Interests: Our goal is understand the role of epigenetic mechanisms in retinal development and disease. To that end, we employ conditional knockout mice, gene editing, next generation sequencing to dissect protein-DNA interactions, and wild-type and mutant pluripotent stem cell-derived 3D retinal organoids with alterations in specific chromatin associated proteins like histone modifying enzymes and related scaffolding proteins. We also dissect the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying cancers that occur in the eye and orbit. Many vision robbing diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and eye cancers lack molecularly targeted therapies that restore vision or treat the cancer. Ultimately, we hope to use the foundational insights from our studies to better diagnose and treat these blinding retinal diseases.
