Bio
Ricky W. Chuang received the B.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA, in 1993, two M.S. degrees in materials science and electrical engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA, in 1996 and 1997, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering from the University of California, Irvine, CA, USA, in 2001.
In 1997, he was involved in the oxide etch development for 0.35- and 0.25- microns backend of line technology as an Intern Process Engineer at Rockwell Semiconductor Systems. From March 2001, he was involved in developing quantum-well infrared detectors (QWIP) at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. After receiving the doctoral degree, he continued working at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a Postdoctoral Researcher responsible for developing QWIP-based focal plane arrays with array sizes of 320 × 256 and 640 × 512 dedicated to single-bend, broad-bend, and dual-bend applications. In February 2003, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan City, Taiwan as an Assistant Professor, where he has been an Associate Professor, since August 2007. His research interests include design, fabrication, and characterization of optoelectronic devices based on III–V semiconductor compounds and integrated optics.
Dr. Chuang received the 9th Annual 2001 Motorola—Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Graduate Student Fellowship for Research in Electronics Packaging in 2001 for a best student paper entitled “Low Loss Deep Glass Waveguides Produced with Dry Silver Electromigration Process” (Ricky W. Chung and Chin C. Lee).
