Ross investigates how medical equipment and processes can be enhanced with mixed reality technologies to support practitioners. Some recent examples include the use of Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality technology combined with patient MRI’s scans to enhance the application transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy; the use of virtual reality in the treatment and remediation of conditions such as Pain Management and PTSD and the use of augmented reality to improve patient alignment during the application of radiation therapies. Another area of interest has been investigating the use of mixed reality systems to provide a richer highly immersive collaborative experience that brings geographically separated people closer together. A technological capability that in part may shape the future of telemedicine.

Associate Professor Ross Smith has a strong research track record demonstrated with high-quality international publications that are cited 1090 times with an H-Index of 18 (google scholar 15th Jan 2021). He is also an active member of the academic community taking on senior conference roles including General Chair of the International Conference of Artificial Reality and Telelexistence and is regularly on a range of international Program Committees.
