Richard A. Simpson

Richard A. Simpson (Life Senior Member, IEEE) received the S.B. degree in electrical science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, in 1967 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1969 and 1973, respectively. He was an Engineer at the MIT Instrumentation (now Charles Stark Draper) Laboratory during summer 1967. He became a Research Associate at Stanford upon completing his graduate studies, served as a Lecturer, and has been a Senior Research Associate since 1976. He was a Visiting Research Associate at the Arecibo Observatory during 1975–1976 and has been the Radio Science Advisor to the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Planetary Data System since 1992. He has participated in the NASA Explorer 35, Viking, Voyager, Magellan, and Mars Global Surveyor missions; and he is a coinvestigator on the European Space Agency (ESA) Mars Express and Venus Express Radio Science Experiments. He has authored or coauthored about two dozen papers and book chapters. Dr. Simpson is a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Astronomical Society/Division for Planetary Sciences (AAS/DPS) and the United States National Committee/International Union of Radio Science (USNC/URSI) Commission J.
