Robert A. Massom

Robert A. Massom (M'00) received the Ph.D. degree in glaciology/remote sensing from the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, U.K., in 1989, where he has been working in the Sea Ice Group since 1980. He then spent three years as a U.S. National Research Council Resident Research Associate with the Oceans and Ice Branch, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD. Since 1992, he has been a Research Associate and later a Senior Research Scientist with the Australian Antarctic Cooperative Research Centre (CRC), renamed the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems CRC in 2003. He has also been a Senior Research Scientist with the Australian Antarctic Division, Kingston, TAS, Australia, since 2006. His current research interests include remote sensing of sea ice; physical properties of sea ice and its snowcover and their ecological significance; polynyas; the impact of anomalous atmospheric circulation on sea ice distribution and ecology; the impact of variable sea ice conditions on penguins; recent Antarctic Peninsula ice shelf breakup events; and interactions between sea ice and the Antarctic Ice Sheet and icebergs.
