Pradeep Kumar Thapliyal

Pradeep K. Thapliyal received the M.Sc. degree in physics from H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar, India, in 1990, and the Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, in 2004. He has been working in the field of satellite meteorology at the Space Applications Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ahmedabad, India, since 1995. He has major contributions in the development of operational algorithms for the retrieval of various geophysical parameters from Indian as well as international satellite missions, such as: atmospheric profiles from multispectral and hyperspectral sounders, upper tropospheric humidity, outgoing longwave radiation, ocean surface shortwave radiation, sea surface temperature, clear sky radiances from geostationary satellite imagers, and soil moisture from microwave radiometer. From 2005 to 2006, he worked as a Visiting Scientist for hyperspectral sounding at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, USA. He is leading various projects for retrieval, applications, and sensor-definition studies for various Indian meteorological satellites. He is a member of the GSICS Research Working Group, the GHRSST-Science Team, and CEOS-SST-VC, representing ISRO. He has authored more than 35 articles published in peer-reviewed international journals. Dr. Thapliyal received the ISRO-ASI Award for 2015, the P. R. Pisharoty Memorial Award by ISRS for 2012, the J. Das Gupta Award by IMS for 2011–2012, and the ISRO Team Excellence awards for 2008 and 2013. He served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Earth System Science from 2012 to 2016.
