Research interests
My clinical interests are in cardiovascular medicine and include cardiac catheter ablation for rhythm disorders such as ventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation. My research has focused on development of new ablation technology and procedural techniques.
Our group is exploring a number of energy sources such as radiofrequency current, microwave, electroporation, and high energy photons to perform ablation therapy. We design and build medical devices to perform and monitor catheter ablation at the Cardiology Workshop at Westmead Hospital. Prototypes are tested on phantom models of tissue and in large animal models for iterative development and validation. We are innovating new methods and technology for using high energy photons (stereotactic body radiotherapy) to target scar in the heart to treat lethal rhythm disorders in patients with heart disease. Depending on the project, students can expect to gain experience in medical device design and development, bench models/wet labs, intact large animal research, and clinical studies/trials.
