Pierre-Alexandre Gourdain received the Ph.D. degree from UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, USA, and Ecole Centrale de Lyon, Écully, France, in 2001. His work at this time was primarily on magnetic confinement fusion.
He moved to Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA, to study matter under extreme conditions on the Cornell Beam Research Accelerator, Los Angeles, CA, USA. He is currently an Associate Professor of physics and astronomy with the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY, USA. He studies the stabilization of runaway confinement using fast ion pumping from ion cyclotron resonance, high beta confinement in tokamaks, the impact of Hall effect on high energy density plasma jets, and the transport properties of warm dense matter.
