Across his academic career, Professor Peter McNair has published over 200 peer reviewed journal papers in the fields of orthopaedics, rehabilitation, biomechanics and rheumatology. He has been an invited speaker in these areas at numerous international conferences, and has international collaborations with research groups in Australia, France, Belgium, Denmark and Canada. Professor McNair's work has been recognised with over 20 national and international research awards, including awards from the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Medicine; International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology, International Society of Biomechanics and Sports Medicine Australia. Professor McNair has had editorial and advisory board roles on five international journals in areas related to biomechanics and rehabilitation. He is a past Chair of the Research Committee of the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy, and was inaugural Chair of the Academic Board of the New Zealand College of Physiotherapy. In 2017, Professor McNair was awarded the Vice Chancellors Award for sustained Individual Research Excellence. In 2020, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Physiotherapy New Zealand for accomplishments related to research and development of postgraduate education.
Professor McNair has engaged in consultancy/committee work with the New Zealand government and several industry partners, including the Ministry of Health, Accident Compensation Corporation, Physiotherapy New Zealand, Department of Labour, Royal New Zealand Airforce, District Health Boards and the Health Research Council.
The institute undertakes innovative research that integrates the physical and psycho-social dimensions of rehabilitation with the goal of enhancing activities of daily living, work and sports - particularly in patients with musculoskeletal and neurological disorders. Professor McNair now leads a research group within the institute focused on areas related to pain and clinical biomechanics, primarily in musculo-skeletal disorders.
Professor McNair teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in clinical biomechanics, functional anatomy, and exercise physiology related to rehabilitation. He has supervised over 40 masters and doctoral thesis students (including international co-supervisions with universities in France, Belgium and Australia) to completion.
