Importantly, Dr. Richardson has made contributions toward the management of key side effects, including treatment-emergent neuropathy in myeloma, its characterization, and strategies to minimize it, especially in the context of bortezomib use. The development of defibrotide for the treatment and prevention of hepatic veno-occlusive disease following stem cell transplant has been a similar and unique effort aimed at improving therapeutic outcomes, with defibrotide emerging as the most promising and only agent in this area of urgent unmet medical need with proven efficacy, resulting in EMA approval in 2013 and FDA approval in 2016. Ongoing studies are now examining its role in prevention as well as critical areas of care including GVHD and other microangiopathies associated with stem cell transplant and immune therapies, as well as other syndromes underpinned by endothelial injury and inflammation, including COVID-19.
