Malik Peiris is Chair Professor of Microbiology and Tam Wah-ching Professor of Medical Sciences at The University of Hong Kong, Honorary Consultant Microbiologist at Queen Mary Hospital and the Scientific Director of the HKU-Pasteur Research Centre at Hong Kong.
Professor Peiris received his medical undergraduate training at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and his postgraduate training in Virology in the United Kingdom. He then worked as a clinical virologist in Sri Lanka and United Kingdom, where he conducted research in arboviral infections, diarrhoeal diseases and infections in the immunocompromised host.
Professor Peiris has authored over 320 research publications. His recent research interests include ecology, evolution, pathogenesis and the epidemiology of animal and human influenza and other human respiratory viral infections. In 2003, he played a key role in the discovery that a novel coronavirus was the cause of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS and in understanding the pathogenesis of this new disease.
He serves currently as a member on the Advisory panel on Emerging Infectious Diseases, Health Protection Agency of Hong Kong and was previously member of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong.
Professor Peiris was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 2006, was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur, France in 2007 and the Silver Bauhinia Star (S.B.S.), Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, 2008.
