Race-nonspecific (basal) pathogen resistance is very important to plant breeders due to its persistence. However, it is often controlled by multiple quantitative trait loci. Knowing the underlying genes will allow for more targeted development in practice through allelic introgression. To identify genes that mediate ethnic nonspecific resistance in barley to the powdery mildew fungus Blumeria graminis f.sp. In barley, we combined a functional genomics approach based on genome-wide transcriptional profiling and transiently induced gene silencing (TIGS, 1400 genes) with association inheritance (resequencing) and meta-QTL mapping approaches. This led us to a shortlist of 50 candidates with consistent evidence of an important role in race-nonspecific resistance in barley. Candidates of particular interest encode proteins involved in the regulation of cell death, such as HvLsd1a, and cell wall remodeling, such as Germin-like proteins or cellulose synthase-like proteins.
