Patrick Ruther (M'03) studied physics at the University of Konstanz, Konstanz, Germany, and received the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1996.
Between 1996 and 1998, he was with the Institute of Microstructure Technology (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Germany) as a Postdoctoral Fellow, where he was responsible for industrial projects on microoptical components based on the LIGA technology. Since October 1998, he has been a Senior Scientist and Group Leader in the Microsystem Materials Laboratory, Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK), University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany, where he is also a Lecturer with the Technical Faculty. His focus is on the design, fabrication, and characterization of CMOS-compatible microelectromechanical systems and the development of new micromachining methods for biomedical microsystems. He was the Technology Coordinator of the European research project NeuroProbes (from 2006 to 2010) developing multifunctional microelectrode arrays for cerebral applications. He is a cofounder of the spin-off company ATLAS Neuroengineering, Leuven, Belgium, developing high-density silicon-based probe arrays for experimental neuroscience.
