Pedro M. Matias

I graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1983 from Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, obtained a Ph.D. in 1986 in Crystallography at the University of Pittsburgh in the U.S.A, and worked as a post-doc at UC Berkeley until 1988. In 1989 I joined the Structural Biology group of CTQB in Oeiras. From 1990 to 1992 I was also an Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico. In 1992 I left IST and took a Research Assistant position at CTQB. In 2008 I became Principal Researcher and Head of the Industry and Medicine Applied Crystallography Laboratory at ITQB. Since 2009 I am also Head of the Structural Biology for Drug Discovery Unit of IBET. I specialized in single crystal Crystallography of small and large molecules by X-ray and Neutron diffraction. My main current research interests are in structural studies of proteins with potential industrial and medical applications. I am a member of the European Crystallographic Association and of the Portuguese Chemical Society.
