I investigate fundamental problems in radiation belt physics with relevance to space weather hazards. I develop global models of plasma waves in near Earth space, essential for the operation of the BAS Radiation Belt Model and, ultimately, to forecast space weather and protect satellites. I also study extreme space weather and have determined the 1 in 100-year space weather event levels for various satellite orbits to help assess the impact of extreme events on the satellite fleet.
