I use fossils to understand major events in the history of life- evolution of new kinds of animals like birds and snakes; global environmental catastrophes, like asteroids, ice ages, volcanoes, and the evolution of Homo sapiens; biogeographic events like oceanic dispersal. I'm fascinated by the idea that macroevolution is more than just lots of microevolution- there are patterns that become visible only over long periods of time, large areas, or at high levels of organization and complexity.
