Research summary
My research contribution to the fields of project management and leadership and project innovation is in deepening understanding of the ways managers and leaders construct and communicate their narratives and stories (e.g. visioning project narratives, narratives about value, narrative about project identity, narratives of innovation, narratives of environmental sustainability) and their implications for meaning making, identity work policy making and strategising. I have applied organisational theories including sensemaking, social identity, narrative and storytelling in understanding the ways construction innovations are managed and led at the levels of industry, firm, project, team and individual. I contributed to building new theoretical and methodological understanding of different aspects of the management and leadership of projects and innovation. I introduced narrative interview research method into the construction project management discipline. I regularly publish articles in peer-reviewed journals (International Journal of Project Management, Project Management Journal, Construction Management and Economics, Industrial Marketing Management Journal, International Journal of Innovation Management, European Journal of Innovation Management, Creativity and Innovation Management Journal, Construction Innovation), books (published by Routledge, Oxford University Press) and book chapters. I actively participate and lead national and international conferences and events. I have a sustained track-record of income generation for cross-disciplinary research projects including grants awarded from ESRC, EPSRC, APM, PMI, UCL Global Engagement Fund. I support staff, earlier career researchers, and PhD and postgraduate students in preparing papers for publications through paper development workshops that I organise and lead.
I have been awarded CIOB International Innovation & Research (I&R) Awards 2016 in the Research Paper category for the paper Sergeeva, N. (2016). What makes an 'innovation champion?' European Journal of Innovation Management, 19(1), 72-89. I have been awarded the ‘Rod Howes’ Commemorative Award for Innovation for the paper Sergeeva, N. (2013). Making sense of innovation in the UK construction sector, ARCOM (Association of Researchers in Construction Management) 29thAnnual Conference, Reading, UK, 2-4 September 2013.
