My research focuses on the protein secretion in relation to the interaction of bacterial cells with the environment, considering Gram-negative (diderm-LPS) and Gram-positive (parietal monoderm) bacteria alike. Main scientific questions are related to the physiology of bacterial protein secretion and the involvement of secreted proteins, either displayed on the cell surface or released into the extracellular milieu, in the bacterial colonisation processes along the food chain, from animal carriage, food contamination to ultimate human infection. Preferred model microorganisms, though, are diarrhoeagenic E. coli (DEC) species, especially enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and shigatoxin-encoding E. coli (STEC), and to some extent Listeria (especially L. monocytogenes) or Staphylococcus as well. I develop further the secretome concept for global investigation of protein secretion in bacterial cells, especially using functional genomic, proteogenomic and proteomic approaches, considering the colibiote, i.e. both the commensal and intestinal pathogenic E. coli (InPEC).
