My research interests are focused in the broad area of forest biotechnology. More specifically, my research group studies various aspects of insect pests and pathogens, particularly those that are important to the forestry industries of South Africa and other countries of the world. We are particularly interested in those insects and pathogens that cause damage and diseases of trees, degrade timber, or that are potentially valuable in various aspects of the pulping process and in the production of industrially valuable compounds. My research programme falls under the umbrella of two major programmes that are linked to defined stakeholders and bases of financial support. One is the Tree Protection Co-operative Programme (TPCP), a cooperative venture between the University of Pretoria, all forestry companies in South Africa, the industry body Forestry South Africa (FSA), and the Government Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). The team members of this programme (30 years old in 2019) bear the primary responsibility for protection issues relating to commercial forestry in South Africa, covering an area of about 1.5 million hectares of plantations. The second major programme under which my research falls is the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) - National Research Foundation (NRF) Centres of Excellence programme. More specifically the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Plant Health Biotechnology (CPHB), which was one of the first six CoE’s to be selected on merit by the DSI for funding in 2004. The CPHB research is focussed on the health of native trees and native woody ecosystems in South Africa and particularly how pests and pathogens move between this environment and non-native trees planted for commercial purposes for forestry, fruit production and as ornamentals.
