Bio
Michael E. Thomas (SM’–) received the B.E.E. (magna cum laude) degree in electrical engineering from the University of Dayton, and the M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from The Ohio State University. He is currently a Principal Staff Engineer with the Applied Physics Laboratory, and a Research Professor with the Department of Material Science and Engineering, Johns Hopkins University. He has been at APL since 1979, where he is currently in the EO/IR Systems and Technologies Group. He is a specialist in electromagnetic theory, optical propagation, and quantum electronics with research interests in measurement and theoretical modeling of atmospheric propagation and remote sensing, optical properties of solids, light matter interaction, and high-pressure gases. He has over 200 journal type publications in these areas. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America, and also holds membership in the International Society for Optics and Photonics, Sigma Xi, and Tau Beta Pi.
