Michael research is focused on the applications of precious metals and their alloys and compounds in nanotechnology (including nanobiotechnology). His publications cover a broad range of topics from computer simulation through to practical applications. The latter include energy-saving coatings for windows, chemical sensors, and new ideas for medical treatments, such as targeting gold nanoparticles to macrophage cells and to protozoan parasites. The optical properties of alloys and compounds is a related theme, because the dielectric function of a material controls its localized surface plasmon resonances and its surface optical properties. Also of interest is the control and manipulation of localized electric fields generated by plasmons. His research has been supported by industry, and by a series of Discovery and Linkage grants from the Australian Research Council. He also consults extensively to industry on metallurgical failures, physical metallurgy, mineral chemistry and metal physics.
