Michael A Mcguckin

Professor Mike McGuckin is the Associate Dean Research in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne. In this role he has responsibility for the strategic direction of research in the University of Melbourne's largest Faculty, which is ranked as the 9th best Faculty of Medicine internationally in the latest Times Higher Education Rankings. Mike’s previous role was as the Deputy Director - Research at Mater Research and a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Principal Research Fellow. In this role he oversaw a portfolio covering all biomedical and clinical research activities at Mater, and was responsible for fostering and developing all research. Mike is the author of over 150 scientific publications with his research currently focused on mucosal infection, chronic inflammation and cancer in the gastrointestinal tract, has held four patents and is a founder of a startup company. Mike has collaborated with multiple pharmaceutical companies, and has been a key opinion leader for industry for successful licensing applications to the US FDA and Australian TGA. Mike is heavily involved in national and international peer review, has served on the Editorial Boards of four international journals, and has served as the lead member of the Academy of the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council for Gastroenterology. Mike has served on the Research Committee of the Gastroenterology Society of Australia and is currently the President of the International Society for Mucosal Immunology. Before leaving Brisbane, he served on the Board of Directors and Chaired the Medical and Scientific Committee for Cancer Council Queensland and was a member of the Research and Development Committee for the Autism Cooperative Research Centre.
