Melvyn Smith received the B.Eng. (Hons.) degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Bath, Bath, U.K., the M.Sc. degree in robotics and advanced manufacturing systems from the Cranfield Institute of Technology, Cranfield, U.K., and the Ph.D. degree in machine vision from the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, U.K., in 1987, 1988, and 1997, respectively.
Currently, he is Reader in Machine Vision within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering, and Mathematical Sciences, UWE. He is Co-Director of both the Machine Vision Laboratory and the Centre for Innovative Manufacturing and Machine Vision Systems, UWE. He has established research projects with several U.K. and international academic and industrial partners and has attracted commercial and public funding from U.K., European, and U.S. organizations. In 2001, he published a book entitled Surface Inspection Techniques (Suffolk, U.K.: Professional Engineering Publishing, 2000) and has also contributed chapters to several other books. He has generated over 40 journal and conference papers in connection with his work and is currently acting as Guest Editor for a special issue of the journal Computers in Industry entirely dedicated to machine vision. He sits on the editorial board of three journals and regularly acts as a referee for many of the leading journals in the field of computer vision.
Dr. Smith is a member of the EPSRC peer review college.
