Her research interests include data science, data mining, machine learning, deep learning, multimedia information systems, big data analytics, semantic-based information management/fusion/retrieval, database management systems, multimedia networking, and security. She has authored and co-authored 2 books and more than 300 technical papers published in various prestigious journals, book chapters, and refereed conference proceedings. Dr. Shyu was awarded the 2020 IEEE Big Data Security Woman of Achievement Award, the 2012 Computer Society Technical Achievement Award and the ACM 2012 Distinguished Scientists Award. She received the Best Paper Award from the IEEE International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration in 2016, the Excellence in Research Journal Award from IGI Global in 2016, the Best Paper Award from the IEEE International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration in 2014, the Best Paper Award from the IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia in 2013, the Best Paper Award from the IEEE International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration in 2012, Provost Research Award from UM in 2012, the Excellence in Research Journal Award from IGI Global in 2011, the Best Student Paper Award with her student from the Third IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing in 2009, the Johnson A. Edosomwan Scholarly Productivity Award from the College of Engineering at UM in 2007, and the Excellence in the Research and Application of Advanced Computing and Internet Technologies to Further NOAA's Service to the Nation Metadata Management Award from NOAA TECH 2004.
