We study how the brain controls breathing and other vital homeostatic control systems in animal models of health and disease. We want to know how uncontrolled seizures disrupts cardiorespiratory control potentially leading to sudden unexpected death (SUDEP) in rat models. We are also focused on studying the effects of opioids on ventilatory control and testing novel compounds that may reverse opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD), acute withdrawal and constipation.
