个人简介
Mary Cronin is a College Lecturer in the School of Public Health, UCC and has worked there since 2004, on a part-time basis. Prior to that she lectured in the Dept of Health Promotion, NUI Galway from 2002-2004 and in the Dept of Applied Social Studies, UCC from 1998-2002. Mary has an MA in Social Policy from UCC and a Diploma in Community and Youth Work from NUI Maynooth. She qualified as a Registered Sick Children's Nurse at Guy's Hospital, London and as a Registered General Nurse at the Cork Regional Hospital. She worked in Community Development in Cork and as a nurse in Ireland, England and Australia, as well as Liberia and Somalia, where she managed emergency vaccination and food supplementation programmes.
Mary's research interests lie in critically analysing and understanding the Health Inequities experienced by marginalised and minority groups, particularly the Traveller community in Ireland. Mary is interested in exploring the roles which Health Discourse, Public Policies and Community Development can play in the amelioration of Health Inequities. She has expertise in Qualitative Interpretive and Critical Social Research, as well as Community Based Participatory Research approaches. She is currently co-supervising a PhD study on young people's perceptions of Cyber-bullying; this study employed a participatory methodology through the recruitment of a Youth Advisory Group to assist in the design, implementation and analysis stages of the study.
Mary's PhD research involves employing Foucauldian concepts on discourse to analyse public policies related to health determinants. She received a post-graduate bursary from the Royal Irish Academy under its Third Sector Research Programme which provided initial funding towards her PhD research.
Mary is one of the College of Medicine and Health's nominees to UCC's Civic and Community Engagement committee; she was an active member of the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Working Group of UCC's Health Matters health promotion initiative from 2012-2017. She supervises research projects at PhD and Masters levels and has a strong commitment to and experience of supporting community engaged research. Mary teaches and co-ordinates under-graduate and post-graduate modules in the areas of Health Promotion, Community Development, Social Policy and health, Health Inequities, Qualitative and Community Based Participatory Research.
