Bio
I am a Professor of Physiology (University of Murcia) and a Scientist at Brigham and Women's Hospital (Harvard University, USA). My research is focused on the use of chronotherapy and nutrigenetics tools to the treatment of obesity and related metabolic alterations/syndrome. I have led since 2008 year the “ONTIME study” (Obesity, Nutrigenetics, Timing and Mediterranean)(clinicaltrials.gov: NCT02829619), which is unique because it already includes well-characterized 5690 participants with behavioral (including napping data), chronobiological and selects SNP genotyping data. I have published more than 200 papers, and currently, I have an h-index of 64 (google scholar, 25/03/2023).
I have been working over a decade in the circadian field, and I have been a pioneer in a) relation between food timing and metabolic risk; b) the development of circadian-related nutrigenomic techniques to characterize individuals; c) the establishment of an obesity treatment tailored to the genetic-circadian traits of the patient. Within these topics, I have demonstrated how different clock genes connect timing with obesity. Throughout these years, we have studied different polymorphisms in clock genes in ONTIME population, and I have collaborated with Dr. Saxena on genetic interaction studies. Our previous work published in Nature Comun, about napping and obesity in a population from the UK, has established the bases for the genetics of siesta. In relation to obesity, our studies have shown that there is an internal clock in human adipose tissue that is crucial for adipose tissue to accumulate or mobilize fat at the right time.
Our work "Timing of food intake predicts weight loss effectiveness,” published in IJO, has been included among the 1% of the best articles of its academic field according to the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and has opened a new door in the potential role of food timing in the treatment of obesity (Crononutrition). In this line, we have published our recent work, which shows converging mechanisms by which late eating may result in positive energy balance and increased obesity risk. Cell Metab. IF: 31.373
My research projects included those funded by the Ministry of Science from Spain (5 projects) with no interruptions since 2005, always as PI; 9 projects from regional sources and several international collaborative projects (4 projects) from the National Institute of Health of the United States (NIH) where I am co-principal investigator (co-PI) (1-R01-DK-105072- 01A1) or co-Investigator (R01DK102696).
I have been visiting professor at Harvard University (Brigham & Women's Hospital) since the 2012 year in the Department of Sleep Medicine.
Social contribution. I have translated my basic science knowledge into real-world health management, and since 1992, I have been the Director of Research at Garaulet Centers of Nutrition with 8 Nutritional Clinics in Spain; we have performed several research projects focused on translating Nutrigenetics and Chronobiology techniques to the clinical practice (funded by MICINN, SENECA, and NIH). As a result, we have constructed three populations, ONTIME, ONTIME JR, and ONTIME MT, with more than 6000 subjects (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02829619, NCT03036592, NCT02895282). I have a strong dissemination background, having written more than 10 books about nutrigenetics, chronobiology, and healthy life habits, such as: "Adelgazar sin milagros", "Pierde peso sin perder la cabeza", "535 recetas para adelgazar comiendo", "Niños a comer" and recently "Simplicity". The book entitled “Los relojes de tu vida” has been among the most-read non-fiction books in 2017.
I have directed more than 17 doctoral theses and have carried out several directions of end-of-degree work (n=9) and master thesis (n=12). I have been very active in national and international social media, with 2100 news about her scientific advances in nutrition, chronobiology, and nutrigenetics in different newspapers around the world (Boston Herald, ABC, The Boston Globe, La Verdad, etc.). She has also appeared in other media, such as radio and television, among which stands out her participation in Master Chef Celebrity, in the brain hunt, or her nutritional work with Chicote.
