个人简介
I am a Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at NorthShore University HealthSystem. Following graduation from Northwestern University Medical School in 1983, I completed a residency in General Surgery, which included a year as chief administrative resident, and a research fellowship in the Department of Endocrinology and Molecular Biology at Northwestern University Medical School. Following the completion of my general surgery residency, I completed a fellowship in Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Following fellowship at MD Anderson, I spent the next 16 years at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine where I rose through the ranks to become the Director of the Gastrointestinal Oncology Program, Chief of Surgical Oncology, and Professor of Surgery. In 2007, I moved to NorthShore University HealthSystem (formerly Evanston-Northwestern Health Care) to assume the position as Chairman of the Department of Surgery.
While at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, I developed research interests in combined modality clinical trials for patients with gastrointestinal malignancies. My clinical expertise focuses on the area of gastrointestinal surgical oncology with specific interests in pancreas, liver, and gastric cancers. I have served as the principal investigator or co-investigator on two recent Intergroup Trials examining the role of combined chemotherapy with external beam radiation therapy as neoadjuvant strategies prior to Whipple procedures for potentially resectable pancreatic cancers. In addition, I have served as a clinical investigator on several multimodality trials examining outcomes following neoadjuvant therapy for gastroesophageal junction cancers. I am the author of over 150 peer reviewed scientific publications, as well as 25 book chapters. I have authored two books on Liver Surgery and Gastrointestinal Oncology. I also serve on the Editorial Board for the Annals of Surgical Oncology and the Journal of Surgical Oncology. I have held numerous positions in the Society of Surgical Oncology, and am a member of the two most prestigious surgical societies: the American Surgical Association and the Society of University Surgeons. I have received numerous awards including the Compassionate Care Award given to one physician annually who exemplifies dedication and compassion in the care of patients with cancer and life threatening illnesses. I have been honored with an Excellence in Teaching Award every year since my arrival as an attending surgeon at Northwestern University in 1992. I have been honored with appointments as Chairman for the Medical Advisory Board for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) and to the Committee for the Pancreatic Cancer Guidelines of the National Comprehensive Cancer Center Network (NCCN).
