个人简介
Dr. Johnson is the Director of Obstetrical Services at the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment (CFDT) at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He holds the George Loeb Harrison Endowed Research Chair in Fetal Therapy. He also serves as professor in the Departments of Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
A true innovator in the fields of Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine, Dr. Johnson helped develop fetoscopic surgical procedures for twin-twin transfusion syndrome and prenatal treatment of fetal lower urinary tract obstructions. He has made significant discoveries examining long term developmental outcomes in children who have undergone fetal spina bifida repair, including demonstrated improvement in motor function in the lower extremities and a decreased need for shunting.
A practiced geneticist, Dr. Johnson collaborates with Alan Flake, MD, FACS, FAAP, to advance techniques for prenatal gene and stem cell therapy.
An invaluable member of the CFDT team, Dr. Johnson specializes in fetal obstructive uropathy and prenatal diagnosis and therapy. He says he is continually inspired by the diverse patient population at the CFDT and the often challenging conditions they face. His goal is to create the best possible outcomes for every patient and patient family.
“I am proud of the 13 years I have been at CHOP. The CFDT has really made big advances in the multidisciplinary imaging and evaluation of pregnancies complicated by anomalies,” he says. “We continue to develop and refine techniques to treat complicated twin pregnancies, congenital tumors, urinary tract obstructions and inherited genetic diseases and improve survival rates and long term outcomes through stem cell and gene therapy.”
Dr. Johnson graduated magna cum laude from Concordia College with a BA in Biology and he earned his medical degree from University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis, MN. In 1980, he received a Masters in Science in Medical Genetics at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Dr. Johnson completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at University of Michigan Medical School and his Reproductive Genetics fellowship at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, MI.
Prior to his appointment at CHOP, Dr. Johnson served as the Associate Director in the Division of Reproductive Genetics at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Hutzel Hospital, both in Detroit, MI. He is board certified in medical and clinical genetics and in obstetrics and gynecology.
