Mark D. Hulett

Prof Hulett completed his undergraduate studies at The University of Mebourne majoring in Biochemistry and Cell Biology and his PhD studies in the field of Molecular Immunology at the Austin Research Institute. In 1998 Prof Hulett was awarded an NHMRC postdoctoral fellowship and joined the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR) in Canberra where he performed pioneering research by cloning a key enzyme in cell invasion, heparanase. Prof Hulett was awarded a Viertel Senior Medical Research Fellowship in 2002, and established the Cancer and Molecular Immunology laboratory at JCSMR to study cell invasion during inflammation, tumour metastasis and angiogenesis. In 2008, Prof Hulett moved his lab to La Trobe University to continue his research in inflammatory disease and tumour progression. Prof Hulett is a past President of the Australia Society for Medical Research (2008) and past Research Director (2012-2016) and Deputy Director of the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (2017-2019). He is the current Head of Department Biochemistry and Chemistry at La Trobe University. Prof Hulett has published over 150 research articles with over 10,000 citations H-index of 50, and won numerous awards, including a Young Tall Poppy Award and the Howard Florey Medal.
