Bio
Marc Salleras received a degree in Physics in 2001 and a PhD in 2007, both at the Universitat de Barcelona. In 2003 he also obtained an Electronics Engineering degree at the same university and a Master in Numerical Methods for Calculus and Design in Engineering at CIMNE (International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering) at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
During his PhD, he enjoyed a pre-doctoral stay at Technishe Universität München (TÜM) under Prof. Gerhard Wachutka at the Lehrstuhl für Technische Elektrophysik for three months (April-July) 2004 where he developed reduced order models using the finite element method (FEM). He also made a short stay (September 2005) at the Institut für Mikrosystemtechnik (IMTEK) at Freiburg University under the supervision of Prof. Jan Korvink working on the modeling and simulation of an Ion Mobility Spectrometer. The title of his thesis was “Thermal Modeling of Microsystems and Electronic Components: Model Order Reduction” and he received an excellent cum laude qualification.
Shortly after completing his PhD he obtained a Postdoctoral Balsells Fellowship for two consecutive years (2007-2009) at the University of California at Irvine (UCI) under Prof. Andrei Shkel supervision. He applied his experience on microsystem thermal modelling to the thermal design of a nuclear magnetic resonance gyroscope (NMRG) microsystem. He took advantage of the INRF (Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility), a Clean Room with self-service access, where he gained hands-on experience in microfabrication processes.
After that, he obtained a JAEDoc fellowship (2009-2012) to join the Micro Energy Sources and Sensor Integration (MESSI) group at the Institute of Microelectronics in Barcelona (IMB-CNM, CSIC). There, he participated in different projects with MEMS devices related to micro solid oxide fuel cells (uSOFC), gas sensors, and micro thermoelectric generators (uTEG) based on silicon nanowires. In addition, he completed the necessary trainings to access and use the Clean Room at IMB-CNM. While at IMB-CNM, he has been pushing the TRL of different devices, actively participating in the design, modeling, fabrication and characterization of devices.
On March 2013 he obtained a “Titulado Superior Especializado de OPI” position. A few months later he obtained a Beatriu de Pinós postdoctoral fellowship to work at IREC (Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya) which he refused to stay on his newly acquired position at IMB-CNM (CSIC). Since 2017 he is responsable of the Group’s Laboratory (Microsystem Characterization Lab). Since 2022 he is the group coordinator in the XRE4S network (Energy Research for Society Network) dedicated to promote technology transfer in energy. He’s also the PI of the Catalan Government Call for Consolidated Research Groups (SGR Cat 2021 - 00497) with a total of 60,000€, as well as two national research projects related to thermoelectricity. His current research is focused on designing, fabricating and characterizing micro thermoelectric generators based on nanomaterials.
Total number of publications 44 (42 SCI, 19 in Q1 (14 in D1), 11 in Q2); total number of citations 608/504 (Scopus/WOS); H-index: 14/13 (Scopus/WOS); Participated in 18 projects (9 national (3 as PI/co-PI), 8 european (3 as a predoctoral fellow), 1 DARPA); 3 research stays (2 predoctoral, 1 postdoctoral); 2 patents; 2 non-competitive contracts; 1 Thesis co-supervised, 1 on-going; 6 Final Degree projects supervised, 1 on-going; 124 participations in conferences (115 international, 9 national); Organizing commitee of MicroMachine Summit 2017 in Barcelona and European Conference on Thermoelectrics 2022 in Barcelona; Reviewer for Energies, Sensors, IEEE Sensors, Nanomaterials, Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering, and Micromachines.
