Marc Denecker's research is in Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. He studies knowledge and its use for solving problems from an empirical formal science perspective. He studies common sense forms of knowledge as well as complex mathematical forms of knowledge. He studies extensions and integrations of existing languages such as logic programming, lambda calculus, nonmonotonic logics, causal reasoning and business rules. He develops novel inference mechanisms and methods to knowledge to solve problems and perform tasks. He is interested in knowledge intense business applications, for which he develops rich but natural and human-friendly extensions of logic, and tools suitable to extract knowledge from domain experts. His group develops the knowledge base system, IDP. He is on the program committee of the main conferences of KR and AI (IJCAI, KR, AAAI, ECAI, ICLP) and is member of the editorial board of Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR).
