His main research interests concern the basics of ultrashort laser pulse coupling with matter, as well as applications in the domain of optical sensing. This includes studying the efficacy of the interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with solids and resulting plasmas as a means for remote detection of elements and compounds with a wide range of applications such as nuclear safety and security and environmental monitoring. He is involved in several projects related to the development of novel optical instrumentation for advanced reactors, specifically to monitor conditions related to reactor structural integrity and safety. Dr. Burger’s ongoing activities are also directed towards studying the interaction of complex intense electromagnetic fields with air, in an effort to understand the fundamentals of nonlinear propagation of phase-modulated structured laser beams in gaseous environments.
