His primary research area is Pervasive/Ubiquitous Computing. Particularly, his research interests include time series and spatiotemporal data mining (e.g., big data from smart cities, user behaviors, and system logs), mobile and wearable devices based context awareness and intelligent interaction, knowledge graph representation learning and reasoning, distributed data management and machine learning systems. He has been the PI and Co-PI of over ten national/provincial/ministerial scientific research projects, e.g., the National Science and Technology Major Project, the National Key Research and Development Project, the project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the project of the Central Military Commission’s Science and Technology Commission, the project of the China Knowledge Center for Engineering Sciences and Technology, the Major Science and Technology Project of Zhejiang Province, and the project funded by the Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang Province.

He has published more than 60 SCI indexed papers on journals, e.g., IEEE TMC, IEEE TCYB, IEEE TMM, IEEE TITS, and IEEE TBME (he is the first/corresponding author of over 50 papers and over 30 papers are on CCF-A/B journals). Over 20 papers have been published on CCF-A conferences, e.g., UbiComp, AAAI, ACM MM, CHI, and WWW. In addition, for five years in a row, there are 6 full papers accepted by UbiComp, the top conference in the area of Ubiquitous Computing. His papers, in most of which he is listed as the first/corresponding author, have been cited more than 2000 times in Google Scholar (h-index: 22). He won the Best Paper Award 2015 of Data and Knowledge Engineering (CCF-B journal) and the Best Paper Awards of HHME 2015 and 2014. He has been granted more than 50 patents (he is the first inventor of over 30 patents). He took part in the formulation of four national standards. He won the first prize of Zhejiang Province Science and Technology Progress Award in 2019.

He is a senior member of the China Computer Federation (CCF), and a committee member of the CCF Technical Committee on Pervasive Computing (TCPC). He is also a member of editorial board for the Journal of System Simulation, the Open Virtual Reality Journal (TOVRJ), and the International Journal of Digital Contents Technology and Its Applications (JDCTA). He served as a TPC chair for several international conferences, e.g., GPC, NCM, and DMAMH, and as a TPC member for various international conferences, e.g., ACCV, CASA, NetGames, CUTE, and CCF BigData.
