His research over the past two decades has focused on (1) accelerator technology developments; (2) radiation materials science spanning metals and ceramics of various dimensions (from nanostructured to bulk) and various structural engineering forms (from nanolayered to nanograined); (3) bridging the gap between ion and neutron irradiation, a key issue in using ion irradiation to emulate neutron damage; (4) materials synthesis and screening for applications under extreme conditions; (5) multiscale modeling for fundamental understanding using ab initio, molecular dynamics simulations, and rate theory calculations. He has graduated 24 Ph.D. students, published about 300 journal papers, and held 17 US patents.
