Margarida Lima was born in Vila Nova de Gaia on 21 June 1962, a beautiful Portuguese city that faces the Douro River at the point where it enters the Atlantic, where she lives to date.
She is the first daughter of Margarida Carvalho and António Lima and she has a wonderful daughter, Cláudia Póvoa.
Besides her family and friends and her professional activity, she also loves painting, poetry, and music.
Educational background: Margarida Lima graduated in Medicine at the Institute for Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto (UP), in 1986. In 2004, she earned a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from the UP, at ICBAS/UP.
Professional background: After a year as a general doctor in training at the Hospital de Santo António (HSA), now integrated into the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto (CHUP), she specialized in Immunohemotherapy. As a specialist, and since 2004 as a senior physician, medical consultant, she developed her professional carrier at the Hematology Department from the same hospital, first as a hospital assistant and, since 2002, as a graduated hospital assistant.
Positions: At the Clinical Hematology Department of the CHP, she is responsible for the Laboratory of Cytometry, since 1992, and for the Multidisciplinary Outpatient Clinic for Cutaneous Lymphoma and Mastocytosis (CMLC), since 2003/2004. From 2005 to 2009, she was invited for the position of Medical Assistant of the Clinical Direction and from July 2006 to July 2013 she was the head of the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Research of the Hospital. From 2013 to 2018, she assumed the direction of the Department of Pathology and, since 2018, she is responsible for the Unit of Hematology Diagnosis (Laboratory of Cytometry and Laboratory of Genetics).
Medical activity: As a clinician, she works at the multidisciplinary outpatient clinic for cutaneous lymphomas and mastocytosis (CMLC) of the CHUP, a reference center for cutaneous lymphomas and mastocytosis, and at the Unit of Hematology Diagnosis, which includes the Laboratory of Cytometry and the Laboratory of Genetics. The Laboratory of Cytometry provides support for the diagnosis of the hematological disorders for several hospitals from the North of Portugal, being a reference center for the study of T- and NK-cell lymphoproliferative diseases.
Teaching activity: She supervised more than 100 stages for medical, biomedical sciences and health technology students, as well as for medical doctors, lab technicians, nurses and other health professionals. As invited professor at the ICBAS and other Portuguese faculties and universities, she has been responsible for the teaching classes, disciplines, and modules from various doctoral, master and graduation courses. As a professor, she supervised more than 30 doctoral theses, master dissertations, and graduation projects, and integrated more than 15 academic and medical specialty juries. She also participated in the organization and gave lessons in more than 20 courses.
Scientific and research activity: Her research interest centers on lymphoproliferative disorders, leukemia and lymphoma, mainly in those arising on T- and NK-cells. As part of her scientific activity, she authored or coauthored more than 80 papers published in scientific journals with peer-review, most of them indexed in the MedLine, and more than 200 presentations in scientific meetings (lectures, oral communications, and posters) and gave more than 50 invited lectures. She also integrated the organizing or scientific committees in various meetings and chaired numerous scientific sessions. As the head of the Department of Research of the CHP and in the context of her own research activity, she assumed the coordination two research groups, the “Clinical Research Group” and the group for investigation of “Blood, lymphopoietic and hematopoietic disorders”, affiliated in the Multidisciplinary Unit for Biomedical Research (UMIB), recognized by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. She also shares the responsibility for the coordination of the “Anemia Physiopathology” research team of the Hospital.
Awards and fellows: In 1987, she was awarded as the best medical student. In 1986 and 1989, she received fellows for staging at the Pasteur Institute, Paris France. Over the years her team received 15 awards and honorable mentions for scientific publications and presentations in medical congresses.
