Systematic Biology: Systematics of Malvales, especially tropical taxa formerly ascribed to Sterculiaceae and Tiliaceae; systematics of Ericaceae, focusing on tropical African and Malagasy taxa. Biocomplexity: Flora of the northern Andes, including the preparation of a manual of the vascular flora of the Parque Nacional Guaramacal, Venezuela; floristic accounts of Malvales and Ericaceae for neotropical and paleotropical flora projects. History of Science: Botanical exploration of Madagascar and neighboring islands in the Indian Ocean; 19th-century natural history in the United States.
