Research Interests
The primary goal of my research interests is to develop quality drug delivery systems.
This is achieved through my pursuit in two closely connected research areas. One of them is concerned with the study of different techniques of microencapsulation using various types of synthetic and natural polymers. The core materials studied include drug substances, oils and microorganisms. This technology, which can be employed to protect and to control the release of the encapsulated material, has tremendous application in the pharmaceutical and allied industries. My research team developed an emulsification technique for microencapsulation using the natural polysaccharide, sodium alginate. This technique has been successfully applied to microencapsulation using other types of natural colloids.
Ongoing research is directed at understanding the effects of different modes of crosslinking using various types of agents. The other research area focuses on microbiological quality of pharmaceutical systems. The studies focus on the influence of formulation and physical factors on the antimicrobial activity of preservatives and the efficacy of different modes of sterilization.
