Lloyd J Whitman

Lloyd Whitman is serving as a senior advisor to the Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), on detail from his ongoing position as Chief Scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. As a member of NSF’s leadership team in the Office of the Director, he works to identify new opportunities for cooperation and collaboration between NSF and other organizations, coordinates the development and implementation of NSF-wide science policies, and advises the Director on integrating strategic planning, assessment, and policy analysis within NSF. He previously served for over five years on detail to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in both the Obama and Trump administrations, most recently as the Principal Assistant Director for Physical Sciences and Engineering and co-leader of the Science portfolio. At OSTP, Lloyd provided senior leadership for a broad range of science and technology areas and national research and development programs and strategies. Lloyd has a B.S. in Physics from Brown University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Cornell University. He has over 160 publications and multiple patents related to his long research career studying nanostructures and their integration into advanced sensor systems, and has been recognized with numerous media citations and awards.
