His work on quantization of linear prediction parameters using 24 bits/frame, done at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, has received considerable attention by the research community. It has been applied in the development of low bit-rate speech coders at a number of telecommunication organizations such as AT&T, NSA, etc., and is currently a part of a number of low bit-rate speech coding standards used in mobile and Internet telephony. He was the first to propose the Kalman filtering-based speech enhancement method. This started a new research area in the the field of speech enhancement and has been pursued by many researchers afterwards. This method has been used in a standardized speech communication system.
