Description of Research Expertise
Immune system abnormalities are the focus of my research. I am particularly interested in the performance of the immune system long-term. I believe passionately that after any severe critical care insult, the immune system in certain individuals has a long-term and persistent aberration in the function of the immune system. It is possible that the immune system never goes back to its original performance. Instead, a new state of immunostasis emerges that is mediated by changes in the regulation of DNA expression. This notion is of great importance for my clinical practice. As a critical care physician, I believe that my mission is to reunite my patients with family and life in a meaningful way.
I focus on abnormalities in monocytes, lack of dendritic cells, and T cell anergy in patients after burn, trauma cancer, surgery, or COVID-19. I demonstrated the emergence of several immune system abnormalities in the wakes of the critical care illness even in seemingly recovered individuals.
My lab utilizes a variety of techniques from DNA, RNA, protein, and functional assays. The majority of my research involves individuals with sepsis, undergoing cardiac surgery or experiencing neurotrauma. I also worked in humanized mice models or Drosophila.
