A method for synthesizing visual textures will be described, wherein pixel values are assigned sequentially according to a conditional probability law estimated from an example texture, with the conditioning being on previously assigned values. The assignment can be either pseudorandom or deterministic, and the sequencing can be "flat" or coarse-to-fine. Results will be presented and compared with those obtained using a simultaneous autoregressive (linear) model, demonstrating that the proposed method yields synthetic textures that more strongly resemble the original in both microscopic and macroscopic (structural) characteristics.
