个人简介
Prof. Ikuta was awarded more than 30 prizes for his outstanding research in biomedical micro machines (Bio-MEMS) and medical robotics from Japanese and International Societies. In 2010, he was awarded a medal of honor with purple ribbon in the Japanese Government's autumn decorations, for his work in biomedical engineering. He is originally renowned for his pioneer work on the Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator and its medical applications from the early 1980s as the inventor of the world's first “Active Endoscope.” Much research on SMA micro actuators, including new control/sensing methods and micro fabrication of SMA thin film was performed. He successfully developed the “Micro Stereo Lithography (IH process)” in 1992. This research is well recognized as the trigger work of three-dimensional micro/nano fabrication. The resolution of micro/nano stereolithgraphy had already reached 100 nm in 1999. He has been proposing the concept and investigating “Biochemical IC chips” which are micro chemical devices including micro pump, reactor, detector, and other micro components to construct overall micro chemical analysis and synthesis. These biochemical IC chips will contribute to tailor-made medicine and wearable/ implantable devices in the near future. For several years, he has been establishing a new robotics and mechatronics field, the so-called “optical-driven nano robotics and mechatronics'' which can work in liquid under a microscope to handle a cell and micro objects in micro biology. The concept of optical-driven nano mechatronics will contribute to both biomedicine and micro/nano fluidics. He was a General Co-Chair of IEEE MEMS'94 and has been contributing to MEMS conferences as a steering committee member. His great effort for an “activity enhanced education program” to create the “imagineer” (a new word to combine imagine and engineer) was introduced as a Japanese TV program
