In the 1970s, he dealt with regional climate problems (such as the local circulation over Lake Victoria) and the parameterization of cloud formation (for example cumulus clouds and cooling tower clouds). In the 1980s and 1990s he applied concepts of non-linear systems analysis to weather data and weather forecast (such as Markov chains, 1 / f noise, maximum entropy production). He dealt in particular with weather phenomena in China and Australia. In the 2000s he also developed simplified, freely accessible climate computer models such as SAM (Shallow Atmosphere Model), PUMA (Portable University Model of the Atmosphere) [1] and PlaSim (Planet Simulator).
In 1994 he received the Max Planck Research Prize , in 2010 the Alfred Wegener Medal and the Lewis Fry Richardson Medal and in 2003 the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize . He is a member of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg and a "Fellow" of the Max Planck Society at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. From 1994 to 1996 he was President of the Nonlinear Dynamics Department of the European Geophysical Society. Since 1996 he has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board on Global Change in the Federal Republic of Germany. From 1994 to 1996 he was Vice President of the Nonlinear Dynamics Working Group of the European Geophysical Society.
Research
Processes underlying climate variability characterize its deterministic (catastrophes and hysteresis) and stochastic (resonances and long range persistence) nature, and both merge under the more general topic of predictability. Applied aspects, besides prediction, are the diagnosis of the past related to global change and the attribution of the causes related to climate and human induced forcing. Employing a spectrum from complex via intermediate to toy models these subjects are being analyzed focusing – more recently – on the rainfall-runoff chain from watershed to continental scales.
