I am currently the course coordinator of the B. Sc. in Physical Activity and Health Sciences in the Department of Sport and Health Sciences at Athlone Institute of Technology. I lecture in a number of areas, including physical activity for health, research methods, the measurement of physical activity and sedentary behaviours and physical activity interventions I completed my postdoctoral research in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick between 2014 and 2016. This was a large scale European project which aimed to increase understanding on the determinants of diet, physical activity and sedentary behaviour, to enable the effective examination of relationship between specific behaviours and health. My work primarily focused on examining the measurement properties of measures of physical activity and sedentary behavior, in an effort to assist new and existing researchers in the area of physical activity and sedentary behavior to choose appropriate tools in their area of research. Prior to undertaking my role on the DEDIPAC project, I held a 1 year postdoctoral position in the Graduate Entry Medical School at the University of Limerick. My primary role during this time focused on initiating some projects with postgraduate researchers within the department, while I was also tasked with the responsibility of reviewing a pediatric diabetes clinic in the pediatric department of the associated University Hospital Limerick. This position provided me with the opportunity to conduct additional research in a clinical setting, while it also exposed me to working in a medical research environment. I also focused on writing research articles, while also preparing several multi-national grant applications. During my Ph.D. research, I completed an observational study on Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviors and a large scale, multi-school PA intervention. This focused on comparing levels of PA and SB to health indices, such as body mass index, skinfold measures, waist-to-hip ratio and cardiovascular fitness measured by indirect calorimetry. I also developed a count to activity thresholds for moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity for the activPAL physical activity monitor in an adolescent female population. My final Ph. D. research study examined the blood lipid profiles and vascular health (using pulse pave velocity and ultrasound evaluation of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness) in a group of adolescent females, and compared health measures to levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviors.
