Kevin B. Smith received the B.A. degree in physics from Rollins College, Winter Park, FL, USA, in 1986, the M.S. degree in physics from Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA, in 1988, and the Ph.D. degree in applied marine physics from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, USA, in 1991. He was a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Marine Physical Lab, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD, La Jolla, CA, USA, until taking a faculty position with the Department of Physics, Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Monterey, CA, USA, in 1995. Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and serves on the Underwater Acoustics and Signal Processing Technical Committees. From 2015 to 2021, he served as a Chair of the Department of Physics, and in January 2021, he took on the role of Chair of the Undersea Warfare Academic Group, in which he supported the Undersea Warfare Curriculum and promoted USW-related research across campus and with organizations outside of NPS. In March 2022, he was appointed the NPS Vice Provost for Research to oversee the broad NPS Research Enterprise portfolio and to help coordinate NPS interdisciplinary research and education in order to accelerate and enhance warfare concept and capability development. He has over 60 refereed publications, over 30 conference proceedings, and has presented over 100 talks at various national and international conferences on acoustics.
