Research interests
Main research interests involve: Cultural Historical Activity Theory; Mathematics teaching, learning and assessment; applied mathematics, mechanics, modelling and problem solving in science and technology; and assessment, testing and measurement.
Currently I lead the Critical Pedagogies research group, and the Socio-cultural interest group in Manchester (I originally convened the BERA SIG on Socio-cultural Activity Theory).
I was lead PI of the series of ESRC Transmaths projects beginning with the TLRP Widening Participation Programme project entitled: 'Keeping the door open to mathematically-demanding programmes in Higher Education' (see transmaths.org) and am currently engaged in projects with Pampaka and colleagues on further such studies, including Brit Academy review of maths anxiety, EEF evaluation of ICCAMS, and the HEFCE Learning Gain project.
I organised the ICME TSG on 'Interdisciplinary Mathematics Education' in 2016 and am coediting a book as a result.
